OME Group Consultants: A Spin-off Success Story
In 1990, two University of Waterloo graduates of Electrical Engineering, Kris Shah
and Frank Baylis, developed a novel method of using radio-frequency technology

A few years later, their research continued under Baylis Medical Company of
Montreal and they began to review available funding sources that would allow them
to maintain control of the business and re-invest in R&D. They found such a
program in Canada Revenue Agency's Scientific Research and
Experimental Development Program (SR&ED).

In 1993, OME Group Consultants was specifically created to file the SR&ED claim
of its sister company, Baylis Medical. Upon successful completion of their first
SR&ED claim, OME Group Consultants received several requests from suppliers
and peers to file SR&ED refunds for them as well. By the end of 1995, OME Group
had prepared successful Scientific Research and Experimental Development refund
claims for over 25 clients.

In 1999, the decision was made to grow OME Group Consultants as a separate
entity and no longer rely solely on referrals from existing clients to fuel its growth.

clients through networking and business development.

With such a large increase in business, OME Group Consultants decided to
formalize all procedures and workflow through the introduction of a new
standard, ISO 9001:2000. This standard would allow OME Group to grow
organically and efficiently. The vision was set out that OME Group Consultants
would provide premium SR&ED claiming services to clients across all industries in
Canada, while exceeding all statutory and regulatory requirements. Targets were
defined for customer service, acceptance rates and claim turnaround time.

level of 28 employees, three office locations and over 400 research and
development-minded clients. We strive to consistently exceed our client’s
